Here we are. Our first blog article for our new vfxfoam.com website. It has been an amazing and wild ride up until this point with setting up our company, hiring talented staff, and getting everything installed at our new headquarters in Ferndale, WA and we’re excited about all of the projects we’ve been working on so far!
VFX Foam is a new full service concept art and custom fabrication company that is taking EPS foam based projects to new levels. We’re using brand new and state of the art machines to produce just about anything you could want, large or small. We can also work with other types of foam, MDF , wood, acrylic and other materials. Our staff also has the ability to custom fabricate parts in house which gives us much more flexibility in terms of what we can offer over our competitors. With our new machines, we’re able to decrease production times which translates into savings for you.
If you’ve never worked with EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) foam before, you’ll be amazed at how many applications it can be used in. I’ve seen everything ranging from custom fabrication, docks and flotation, geofoam applications, construction and housing, custom signs, movie and tv props, architectural facades, shape molding and much more. EPS foam also exhibits amazing thermal resistance properties. Thermal resistance is expressed in R-values, the higher the number, the better the insulation. The R-value of the most commonly used Class (Class SL) is 1.13 for every 50mm thickness. Thus, 44mm of this Class of EPS delivers an R-value of + 1.0. Age will not affect thermal performance. EPS foam is closed cell which means it cannot absorb water. During the process of moulding a block, tiny channels are formed between the EPS particles. If the material is immersed in water these tiny channels can be filled with water. After immersion for more than 360 days, there may be up to 6% water content by volume which has entered the channels. Even under such an adverse and rare condition of prolonged saturation, EPS suffers little adverse effect. It maintains its shape, size, structure, cohesion and physical appearance. The ability of EPS to resist the adverse effects of moisture is exemplified by its widespread use in floats, marinas and other applications, which involve full or partial submergence in water for prolonged periods of time.
EPS is manufactured in a number of densities, and each class exhibits excellent compressive and flexural strength and dimensional stability characteristics at a very high strength to weight ratio. The range of classes available enables our clients to select the most appropriate balance between structural and insulation properties for any building application. This also makes EPS foam an excellent choice for aerospace projects and prototypes.
